Digestion
In Sensory Herbalism, the Digestive system is associated with the Earth element. The digestive system is where we process our food, making nutrients bioavailable to nourish our body, from which all else can be built. Having good mouth health is paramount as the mouth is the gateway into our bodies.
The gastro-intestinal tract (GIT) is a pipeline that runs from the mouth to the anus. It’s lined with delicate mucous membranes that form an essential boundary between the outside environment and our internal environment. This pipeline is full of millions of bacteria, we also host other single-celled organisms known as archaea, as well as fungi, viruses and other microbes. There is a lot of research happening at the moment into gut bacteria and how individual bacteria actually support and inform about brains and nervous systems; infact because of this the GUT is often referred to as the second brain. Other mahor functions of our millions of microbes include informing the immune system, providing the correct nutrients for our cells and protection by preventing colonisation by harmful bacteria and viruses.
Mouth Health Gut Health
Interestingly, recent research has been conducted to look at how bacteria from the mouth, and specifically the teeth and gums, can spread through the body challenging the immune system and setting up patterns of disease that might appear to be unrelated. Bacteria formed the mouth can travel into the gut causing dysbiosis and gastrointestinal issues, that may range from mild symptoms of loose stools or wind, to more chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
Mouthwash
We have developed a herbal mouthwash to use a preventative for bacterial over-growth in the mouth that can lead to sore, inflamed gums. Teeth and gums are particularly vulnerable when the immune system is challenged. Have you every smelled your own breath when you are poorly? There’s a sweet, musty smell. GPs would often smell a person when we were kids to identify infection.
Using a herbal mouthwash from time to time can help promote mouth, gum and teeth health but can also help when you have a sore throat, a cough or cold to help support and protect the delicate mucous membranes of the mouth.
We combine lymphatic and healing properties of Calendula with anti-microbial action of Myrrh, Frankincense and Propolis. And there’s a little minty and tea tree freshness on top.
Keep your breath fresh and your teeth and gums healthy!
