By the Seed SistAs

For over 25 years, our Healing Balm has been a cherished preparation in our family—a true staple of our home first aid kit that has soothed everything from scraped knees to nappy rashes to cold sore outbreaks to painful shingles rashes. Its story is intertwined with our own, having nurtured our elderly, our babies, and now the grandkids. This versatile remedy is a testament to the gentle power of nature’s ingredients, blending tradition, care, and botanical wisdom.

A Tradition of Our Healing Balm

The Healing Balm began as a simple solution for many sensitive skin conditions, but we carefully blended the mix to encompass viral and bacterial infections of the skin too. Over the years, it has evolved into a multi-purpose salve used by everyone in the family. From soothing irritated skin to calming scrapes and cuts, thousands of people have applied this balm to untold conditions, and we have received countless letters of thanks from those who have even learned to make their own versions.

Our Herbal Journey

Our journey into the art of balm-making started over two decades ago as baby herbalists, deeply inspired by the wisdom found in Herbal Remedies by Christopher Hedley and Non Shaw. This book ignited our passion for natural healing, and over the years, we have refined how we make healing balm to perfection. The consistency, efficacy, and gentle yet powerful nature of our Healing Balm have stood the test of time, garnering wonderful reviews and testimonials from those who have experienced its benefits.

The Power of Infused Oils to Make Healing Balm

The heart of our balm lies in its beautifully infused oils of calendula, hypericum, and lavender.

Each herb brings unique properties to the blend.

Calendula (Calendula officinalis)

Calendula is a renowned vulnerary herb celebrated for a remarkable ability to accelerate wound healing. The vibrant, sunny flowers of this Solar herb not only uplift the spirit but also provide gentle warmth, making calendula a symbol of nurturing care.

This extraordinary herb works by stimulating the growth of new, healthy tissue at the wound site. Calendula also supports lymphatic movement, ensuring that the body effectively clears out debris, old broken cells, and any pathogenic microbes that might hinder recovery. By encouraging lymphatic drainage and reducing inflammation, calendula creates an optimal environment for healing, allowing the body to repair itself fully and efficiently.

Hypericum (Hypericum perforatum)

Also known as St. John’s Wort, hypericum is another herb of the Sun that we love to include for potent antiviral and vulnerary properties. It supports the body in healing wounds while also clearing out viral infections, making it especially useful for herpetic skin infections like cold sores or shingles.

As a vulnerary, hypericum excels at promoting the repair of damaged tissue by stimulating the body’s innate ability to regenerate. This deep healing action extends to soothing nerve-rich areas, making hypericum particularly helpful for wounds accompanied by nerve pain or sensitivity. With an ability to protect against microbes, nourish nerve regrowth, and aid in tissue restoration, this one is a superstar within the mix.

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

The beloved ‘herb of grannies,’ lavender is renowned for antimicrobial and skin-healing properties. The familiar delicate, fragrant aroma has a calming effect on the mind—especially good when dealing with injuries, as so many bumps, cuts, and scrapes can come with shock and stress.

As an antimicrobial agent, lavender helps protect wounds from infection by neutralising harmful microbes, ensuring a clean environment for natural skin repair. The anti-inflammatory action further supports the healing process by reducing redness, swelling, and irritation. Additionally, lavender promotes healthy circulation, bringing vital nutrients and oxygen to the wound site, accelerating tissue repair while its soothing scent aids in relaxation and emotional well-being.

Crafting the Healing Balm

Making the balm is a fun process that can be shared with friends or family—a wonderful way to slow down and connect with the simple joys of creation.

Ingredients:

  • 4 parts infused oil (equal parts of calendula, hypericum, and lavender infused oils)
  • 2 parts shea or cocoa butter
  • 1 part beeswax
  • 3% Lavender essential oil

Method:

  1. Combine the infused oil, butter, and 80% of the beeswax in a bain-marie. Heat gently until fully melted.
  2. Test the consistency by dropping a small amount onto a cold plate from the freezer. If it’s too soft, add more beeswax.
  3. Once satisfied, heat the mixture slightly longer to ensure all ingredients are well-blended.
  4. Remove from heat and add the lavender essential oil to the melted mixture.
  5. Pour into sterilized jars and let cool before sealing.
