Kitchen Remedies – Onion Syrup

Kitchen medicine is so important in times when it is hard to get to the shops or the herbs needed are not in season, we can look to our store cupboard and fridge for essential healing foods. Most of us keep onions and sugar or honey in the cupboard. Onion syrup is a winner to help soothe the lungs and support a busy immune system during viral infection and it’s so easy to make.

You need:

· A jar
· A couple of onions (red or white will do – red are milder)
· Some garlic and/or ginger (optional)
· Sugar or honey

1. Start by slicing up the onions quite thinly and add garlic and ginger if you have them in.
2. Create a layer of onion and garlic and ginger in the bottom of the jar about 3cm thick.
3. Pour honey over the top or cover in sugar, a good cm.
4. Continue this layering process until you reach the top of the jar.
5. Finish with a layer of honey or sugar and cover with the lid.
6. Leave overnight preferably in the fridge
7. It will turn into a dark runny, sticky liquid
8. You can use it straight from the jar or squeeze it through a muslin.
9. Keep it in the fridge.

Onion Syrup

We also use brown, soft molasses sugar, it is unrefined, and tastes delicious as well as making a lovely gooey syrup. This syrup is fabulous to use when the family have nasty coughs, it seems to really help get the gunk off your chest and speed up the infection times helping the pathogens to working their way out of the body….brilliant cheap kitchen medicine

For use take 2 – 3 teaspoons, 3 times daily or just one teaspoon for smaller children… Kids love making this one and generally love the taste of the syrup too. It’s super simple.
